Australian Shepherds make wonderful companions. Owning an Aussie requires a lot of responsibility. They require lots of attention and companionship in addition to training, especially in their early stages. Due to their loyalty and trainability, Aussies make the ideal family companions and are excellent with children. They tend to become quite protective of their family due to the fact that they become part of that family. Aussies are a double-coated breed, which requires regular care and brushing. However, with routine brushing, shedding should be kept to a minimum with the exception of the semi-annual "coat blow". In general, Aussies are a healthy breed. They live, on average to be 12 years of age. Reputable breeders should screen all breeding stock for genetic issues and should be willing to replace the dog should any issues arise. Aussies have sensitivity to many drugs which we are careful to avoid. Reputable breeders will have a wide variety of questions for you and will be your mentor for the life of the dog answering any and all questions you might have. Please note that there are no varieties of the Australian Shepherd, such as "standards", "minis" or "toys". There are Australian Shepherds and there are Miniature American Shepherds, which are separate breeds.
